Course Description

ESL 100-001 is designed to develop students' English proficiency in the areas of speaking and listening. The course is divided into three units of celebrities, commercial markets, and travel. In each unit, students will be expected to give one group presentation and one individual presentation. Prior to each presentation, students will acquire useful grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

Course Goals - By the Spring 2009 semester, students of ESL 100-001 should be able to:
  • Collaborate with their classmates entirely in English
  • Deliver a 5-minute presentation on celebrities
  • Deliver a 7-minute presentation on commercial markets
  • Deliver a 10-minute presentation on a specific place around the world
  • Confidently interview native-speakers of English on campus
  • Ask and answer various WH-questions
  • Identify and label at least 40 different types of food in English
  • Identify and label at least 15 different types of clothing in English
  • Apply their newly acquired speaking/listening skills in and outside the classroom environment
  • Demonstrate a higher confidence level when speaking English to compared to their confidence upon entering the course
